Afrobeat

Afrobeat is a music genre that started in Nigeria in the 1960s, the pioneer of the genre was claimed by Fela Anikulapo Kuti in 1963. Fela Kuti’s creation was fully established in the 1980s and was recognized worldwide. Afrobeat may have started in Nigeria but it expanded to its neighbors as well as worldwide where it influenced imitators. In his shows, his performances are action-packed and filled with the brim with personality. He allows his music as a way to preach his political views.

Afrobeat is rooted in another West African genre called Highlife which is a music genre that started in Ghana in the early 20th century. Also, it is mixed with Jazz influences; Fela Kuti claims James Brown who is an artist popular in the US as an influencer for his music. He used horns, guitars and funk elements in his music.
